From Proto-Vietic *sɛːk, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *saik ~ *siək (to skin, peel); cognate with Tho [Cuối Chăm] sɛːk⁷, Old Mon snāk (two-edged sword) (modern Mon သၞာ် (hnaik, two-edged sword)), Nyaheun saːk ("to tear"). Compare also tạch.
