From Old French tost, from Vulgar Latin tostum, from the neuter of Latin tostus (“toasted”), later meaning "hotly, promptly" in Vulgar Latin. Cognate to Italian tosto, Franco-Provençal toût, Catalan tost, Occitan tost, Walloon toist, Ladin tosc.
