túaisi

Old Irish

Etymology

From a form related to Proto-Celtic *tausyeti (to be silent) (from *tausos, whence tóe (silent)), suffixed with an unknown element that resulted in Old Irish -ss- /s/. It cannot be directly from *tausyeti since the root-final s would have disappeared in such a formation, as it did in Welsh tewi.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈtuːa̯sʲi]
