From Old Cornish teilu, from Proto-Brythonic *teɣlʉɣ, from Proto-Celtic *tegoslougom, from Proto-Celtic *tegos (house) + Proto-Celtic *slougos (troup, army), equivalent to chi +‎ lu. Compare Irish and Scottish Gaelic teaghlach, Manx lught thie, and Welsh teulu.
