Learned borrowing from New Latin thyreoīdēs, itself borrowed from Ancient Greek θῠρεοειδής (thŭreoeidḗs, shield-shaped), from θῠρεός (thŭreós, oblong shield) +‎ -ειδής (-eidḗs, -form, -like).
