Usage notes

  • Depending on the scheme, "Central Vietnamese" can be variously defined, but always includes the North Central dialects from certain parts of Thanh Hoá southwards to Huế. In linguistic literature, the South Central dialects of Đà Nẵng-Quảng Nam-Quảng Ngãi can be seen included within Southern Vietnamese (see Tooyama (2018)'s treatise on dialects of Quảng Nam),[1] yet these dialects have features (both conservative and innovative) align with the North Central dialects. On the other hand, the Nẫu dialects of Bình Định and Phú Yên are sometimes subsumed in Central Vietnamese by laymen, although they have far fewer Central features.
