From Proto-Vietic *g-leːt (“ground”). Cognate with Proto-Pong *kleːt⁸. Doublet of bệt.
Attested as Northern Middle Vietnamese blẹt in Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).
