Irish
Etymology
From Middle Irish trían, from Old Irish trïan.[1]
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /tʲɾʲiən̪ˠ/, /tʲɾʲiənˠ/[2]
Noun
trian m (genitive singular triain, nominative plural trianta or treana)
- third (one of three equal parts of a whole)
Usage notes
This word frequently irregularly undergoes eclipsis rather than lenition after dhá (“two”): dhá dtrian ― two thirds. This is a remnant of Old Irish, in which trïan was a neuter noun, and neuter nouns undergo eclipsis after dá.
