A 19th-century neologism, coined by A. Kronvalds in 1872 from turpināt (past stem: turpināj-) (“to continue”) +‎ -ums, itself coined by Kronvalds from turp (“further”) +‎ -ināt.^[1]

turpinājums m (1st declension)

1. continuation (the act of continuing something; that which continues something; the next installment of something)

   cīņas, pārbaudes turpinājums ― the continuation of the fight, of the test

   sapulces, koncerta turpinājums ― the continuation of the meeting, of the concert

   domas turpinājums ― the continuation of a thought

   tradīciju turpinājums ― the continuation of traditions

   rīkles tiešs turpinājums ir barības vads ― the direct continuation of the throat is the esophagus

   turpinājums sekos ― to be continued (lit. a continuation will follow)
