valtis
Lithuanian
Pronunciation
Etymology 1
Compare Latvian valte (“(type of) boat”), which according to Endzelīns is from Proto-Indo-European *welH- (“to turn, wind”), whence also vélti (“to roll; to full (cloth)”) and Latvian velt (“to roll”). Smoczynski explains the word as originally meaning "an object made by nailing (boards together)", invoking vélti's secondary meaning of "to beat cloth".[1]
Possibly the same word as etymology 3 (“fishing net”) below. Compare Greek γρίπος (grípos, “fishing net; fishing boat”).
