Short for Godverdorie, which is God verdore je (“may God make you lose your mind”), related to archaic door (“crazy”), German Tor (“fool”), or alternatively God verdorre je (“may God make you wither, shrivel”), related to dor (“dried out, sere”). Sometimes interpreted as a minced oath for verdomme (“damn”). Compare regional German verdorri.
