From local Medieval Latin vereda (“main road”), perhaps from Vulgar Latin verēdus (“light breed of horse”), from Gaulish *werēdos, ultimately from Proto-Celtic *uɸoreidos (compare Welsh gorwydd (“horse”)). Cognate with Portuguese Breia and Spanish vereda (“path”).
