Reduplication of waha from Proto-Polynesian *waha (compare with Hawaiian waha, Rapa Nui haha, and Tahitian vaha)[1][2] from Proto-Oceanic *fafa (compare Samoan fafa) from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *baba₁ (compare with Malay bawa (to carry, to bring (in general)), Tagalog babá (to piggyback))[3]
