From Byzantine Greek ἐβγαίνω (ebgaínō), with metathesis from Ancient Greek ἐκβαίνω (ekbaínō, “go out”) (perfect ἐκβέβηκα (ekbébēka)), from ἐκ- (ek-, “out”) + βαίνω (baínō, “to go”).
