Etymology
A masculine formation from the much more common word δάμαλις f (dámalis, “heifer”). From Proto-Indo-European *demh₂- (“to tame, domesticate”). Cognate with Albanian dem (“bull”), Old Irish dam (“ox”), Persian دام (dâm, “livestock”), and Welsh dafad (“sheep”).
