Etymology

From Proto-Hellenic *dṓtōr, from Proto-Indo-European *déh₃tōr (giver, donor), from *deh₃- (to give) (whence also δίδωμι (dídōmi, I give)). Synchronically δίδωμι (dídōmi) +‎ -τωρ (-tōr).

Cognates include Sanskrit दातृ (dā́tṛ) and Latin dator.
