From κερᾱτών (kerātṓn, made of horns) +‎ -ῐ́ᾱ (-ĭ́ā), from κέρᾰς (kérăs, horn), potentially referring to the horn shape of the carob fruit. Compare κερωνῐ́ᾱ (kerōnĭ́ā), κερᾱτέᾱ (kerātéā).
