Etymology
From κέρᾰς (kérăs, “horn”) + -ῐον (-ĭon, diminutive suffix). The sense of “carob“ stems from a Semitic loan and later mingled with the “hornlet” word, compare Arabic قَرَظ (qaraẓ, “acacia”), Classical Syriac ܩܸܪܲܛܵܐ (qerraṭṭā, “acacia; carob”).
