Etymology

Inherited from Byzantine Greek κόβω (kóbō), from the Ancient Greek κόπτω (kóptō, “cut”) from the perfective stem κοψ- in the pattern of -ψ- > -β- as in κλέπτω (klépto), κλεψ- > κλέβω (klévo, “steal”).^[1] Also see κόπος (kópos, “toil”). Doublet of κόπτω (kópto).
