κώδεια

Alternative forms

  • κώδεα (kṓdea), κωδία (kōdía), κωδύα (kōdúa), κώδυια (kṓduia)

Etymology

No cognates. Furnée showed that the variants point to a Pre-Greek origin; in addition, he compares words for "cup", like κώδων (kṓdōn, bell), κοτύλη (kotúlē, cup), κόνδυ (kóndu, cup), κώθων (kṓthōn, Laconian drinking vessel), but also Etruscan 𐌒𐌖𐌕𐌖𐌌 (qutum, kind of vessel).
