Etymology

Resembles λεπίς (lepís, scale) +‎ *-ρᾱ (*-rā), but with unclear morphology. Perhaps both words are ultimately Pre-Greek; compare λεβηρῐ́ς (lebērĭ́s, shed skin), and see λέπω (lépō, to peel) for more.[1]
