Has been derived from πάλλω (pállō, “to swing, rock”), which is conceivable but not compelling. Alternatively, it can be connected to Latin pollen (“fine flour”) and puls (“meal, porridge”), all from Proto-Indo-European *pel- (“flour, dust”).
