Etymology

From Proto-Hellenic *statós, from Proto-Indo-European *sth₂tós (placed, standing). Cognate with Sanskrit स्थित (sthita, standing, situated), Latin status (fixed, set), and Old Norse staðr (restive, stubborn (of a horse)).
