Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *tórmos (borehole), from Proto-Indo-European *terh₁- (to rub, bore, twist). Cognate with Hittite [script needed] (tarma-, nail, peg), as well as perhaps Proto-Germanic *þarmaz (gut, intestine).[1]
