Etymology

Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek φθινόπωρον (phthinópōron),[1] from φθίνω (phthínō, “to lessen, to fall down, to wilt”) and ὀπώρ(α) f (opṓr(a), “last part of summer; fruit”) + -ον n (-on).[2] Doublet of φτινόπωρο (ftinóporo). Also see χινόπωρο (chinóporo).
