φορύνω

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • φορύσσω (phorússō)

Etymology

The formation with the suffix -ύνω (-únō) is similar to μολύνω (molúnō, to stain, defile) and παλύνω (palúnō, to strew, sprinkle). The element φορυ- (phoru-) cannot be analyzed. Perhaps it belongs to φύρω (phúrō, to mix, defile, mingle).
