A medical expression. Formally it may be compared with ὑστέρα (hustéra, “uterus, womb”) and names of diseases like ἴκτερος (íkteros, “jaundice”) and ὕδερος (húderos, “dropsy”). Perhaps, this word is a substantivization from unattested *χολερός (*kholerós), with shift of accent. According to Beekes, a basic derivation is more likely from χολή (kholḗ, “gall, bile”) than from χολάς (kholás, “entrails, guts”), but a Pre-Greek origin cannot be ruled out. Irish galar (“sickness, illness”) has to be kept separate.
