Alternative forms

Etymology

Inherited from Middle Russian аптека (apteka), from Old Ruthenian аптека (apteka), from Middle Polish apteka (16th c.). Perhaps from Old Polish apoteka (att. 1484) and Middle High German apothēke, but more likely from Middle Low German abteke. Either way, from Latin apothēca (repository) and from Ancient Greek ἀποθήκη (apothḗkē), itself from ἀποτίθημι (apotíthēmi, to put away), from ἀπο- (apo-, away) + τίθημι (títhēmi, to put). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂epó and *dʰé-dʰeh₁-ti. Doublet of бути́к (butík).
