Inherited from Proto-Slavic *grěti, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰer- (warm). Cognate with Ancient Greek θερμός (thermós, warm) (whence те́рмос (térmos), термо- (termo-)), Latin formus, furnus, and possibly Proto-Germanic *warmaz (whence English warm).
