Borrowed from Polish kościół (“church”), from Czech kostel, from Old High German kastel, from Latin castellum (“castle, fort”), because medieval churches were fortified.[1] Compare Ukrainian костьо́л (kostʹól) / косте́л (kostél) and Belarusian касцёл (kascjól).
