луга

Bulgarian

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *lugъ m, *luga f, probably of Germanic origin (see Proto-Germanic *laugō (lye)).

Mladenov tentatively considers a native origin (at least for some of the meanings), comparing it with native Bulgarian слуз (sluz) (with s-mobile), dial. лу́за (lúza, mucus) and possibly obsolete *luža (puddle, silt), Lithuanian liū̃gas (swamp).
