Etymology

N-prepositional form of earlier *їма (*jima), inherited from Proto-Slavic *jima. Like with adjectives, the historic dual instrumental ending supplanted the old plural instrumental ending *-їми (*-jimi). Compare Czech, Polish, and Slovak nimi.
