Inherited from Old East Slavic сего дьне (sego dĭne), from Proto-Slavic *se dьne / *sego dьne, from *sego, genitive of *sь (this) + *dьnь (day). Synchronically analyzable as a univerbation of сего́ (sevó) +‎ дня́ (dnjá).

Cognate with Belarusian сёння (sjónnja) and Ukrainian сього́дні (sʹohódni).
