Etymology

Inherited from Old East Slavic сѣчень (sěčenĭ), from Proto-Slavic *sěčьnь (“January, February”), lit. "the month of tree cutting", from Proto-Slavic *sěťi (“to cut”), from Proto-Indo-European *sek- (“to cut”), with -ень (-enʹ). Cognates include Polish styczeń (“January”), Serbo-Croatian siječanj (“January”), and Macedonian сечко (sečko, “February”).
