Scientific term, ultimately from Ancient Greek χορδή (khordḗ, “string, tendon”). Doublet of ко́рда (kórda, “cord, musical chord”), borrowed via Latin. Further akin to Bulgarian хе́рния (hérnija, “hernia”) of Latin origin.
