Scientific term, ultimately from Ancient Greek χορδή (khordḗ, string, tendon). Doublet of ко́рда (kórda, cord, musical chord), borrowed via Latin. Further akin to Bulgarian хе́рния (hérnija, hernia) of Latin origin.
