Etymology

From Ancient Greek βάλσαμον (bálsamon), likely through Aramaic, Doublet of בָּשָׂם. In the "persimmon" sense, a 20th century semantic shift under the influence of English persimmon, itself from Powhatan pasimenan (dried fruit).
