Disputed. Presumably from a Western Semitic form attested in Ancient Egyptian as

(ꜣwšꜣmm). Possibly of ultimate origin ירו (yarú, “he lays down”) +‎ שלם (Shalém, “the Canaanite god Shalem”). Popular etymological explanation יראה (yir'éh, “he sees”) +‎ שלום (shalóm, “peace”). Akin to Akkadian 𒌑𒊒𒊓𒅆𒆠 (Urušalim) and Classical Syriac ܐܘܪܫܠܡ (ʾŪrišlēm). Word-end pronunciation of -áyim most likely a post-Biblical development.
