From Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾltyštʾl /⁠artēštār⁠/, “warrior”),[1][2] borrowed from Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬚𐬀𐬉𐬱𐬙𐬀 (raθaēšta) / 𐬭𐬀𐬚𐬀𐬉𐬱𐬙𐬀𐬭 (raθaēštar) / 𐬭𐬀𐬚𐬋𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬁 (raθōištā, “warrior”, literally “standing in a chariot”), from Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬚𐬀 (raθa, “chariot, car”) + Proto-Iranian *staH- (“to place, set, stand”), the latter from Proto-Indo-Iranian *staH-, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (“to stand”).[2][3] Cognate with Sanskrit रथेष्ठ (ratheṣṭha, “standing on a chariot, (of such a) warrior”). Doublet of نیساری (nisâri).
