Etymology

From سودان (sūdān) +‎ ال (al-). Historically, the term was used to refer to Black Africa (Sub-Saharan region) in general, as the root word سُود (sūd) means "Blacks". It's one of the Arabic country names, which requires the definite article ال (al-).
