Etymology

From مُحِيط (muḥīṭ, ocean), مُتَجَمِّد (mutajammid, frozen), active participle of تَجَمَّدَ (tajammada, to freeze, to be frozen), and شَمَالِيّ (šamāliyy, northern); literally "the northern frozen ocean."
