Etymology

Inherited from Sanskrit तक्षन् (takṣan). The medial -r- is unexpected, baring resemblance to Persian ترخان (tarxân), though direct influence is uncertain. Compare کروڑ (karoṛ) and Hindustani अख़रोट / اخروٹ (axroṭ), with similar developments. Cognate with Hindi तखान / Urdu تکھان (takhān).
