دينة
North Levantine Arabic
Etymology
From Arabic أُذَيْنَة (ʔuḏayna), a diminutive of Arabic أُذُن (ʔuḏun, “ear”), which probably went through an intermediate form *وْذَيْنـ (*wḏayn-). The loss of the original semivowel وْ (w-) from this form would parallel the loss of the semivowel يْـ (y-) in the words ديّات (dayyāt, “hands”, affectionate), from *يْدَيَّات (*ydayyāt), and حَنَّا (ḥanna, “John”), from *يْحَنَّا (*yḥannā).
