Etymology

Inherited from Middle Hindi ساون (savn /⁠sāvan⁠/) (c. 1780),[1] from Prakrit 𑀲𑀸𑀯𑀡 (sāvaṇa), from Sanskrit श्रावण (śrā́vaṇa).[2] Cognate with Bengali শাওন (śaōn), Gujarati સાવણ (sāvaṇ), Punjabi ਸਉਣ (sauṇa) / ساون (sāvn), Sindhi سانوڻ / सांवणु (sā̃vaṇu). Compare Pashto ساوڼ (sāwaṇ).
