Etymology 1

From Middle Persian šʾnk' (šānag, “comb; pitchfork”),[1] from Proto-Iranian *fšā- (“to comb”), from Proto-Indo-European *peḱ- (“to pluck (wool, hair)”).[2] Cognate with Khotanese kṣāna- (“shoulder”), etc.

Etymology 2

Of uncertain origin. Bailey derives the root from Proto-Indo-European *psen-, which he takes as a metathesis of Proto-Indo-European *spen-, and links with Ancient Greek σφήν (sphḗn), as well as with English spoon and spade.[3] Alternatively, from the same origin as Etymology 1.[4]
