Etymology 1
- From Aramaic פִיקֵּס (pīqqēs, “to remove the coils of blossoms on gourds”), from Ancient Greek ποκίζω (pokízō, “to shear, crop, prune”), from Ancient Greek πέκω (pékō, “to shear wool”).
- Related to Aramaic פַּקּוּעָא (paqqūʿā, “a type of gourd”), from Akkadian 𒉿𒅅𒄣𒋾 (peqqūtu, “colocynth, cucumber, gourd; vine-plant that spreads across the ground”).
