Borrowed from Arabic لَاهُورِيّ (lāhūriyy), from لَاهُور (lāhūr, Lahore), the fabric's place of origin. By surface analysis, لاهور (lâhor, Lahore) +‎ ـی (, nisba suffix). Compare also یمنی (yemeni) and *شامی (şami), other kinds of headscarves, etymologically from toponyms.
