Inherited from Middle Persian [script needed] (bxtg /⁠baxtag⁠/, “divided; bruised; castrated”), from Proto-Iranian *baxta-ka- (“to break”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeg- (“to break”). Sense 2 developed from (panbe-ye paxte, “processed cotton”).^[1]
