Corruption of Classical Persian پَرَشَاوَر (parašāwar), ultimately from Sanskrit पुरुषपुर (puruṣapura, “city of men”). More at Peshawar. Compare Northern Hindko پشور (piśaur), Punjabi پِشَور (piśaur), Persian پیشاور (pešâvar), Urdu پِشاوَر (piśāvar).
