Etymology
From Proto-Iranian *hajáhram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *saȷ́ʰásram, from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-ǵʰéslom.
Indo-Iranian cognates include Northern Kurdish hezar, Baluchi ہزار (hazár), Persian هزار (hazâr), Pashto زر (zër), Ossetian ӕрзӕ (ærzæ), and Sanskrit सहस्र (sahásra). Non-Indo-Iranian cognates include Latin mille and Ancient Greek χίλιοι (khílioi). Akin to Old Armenian հազար (hazar), a Middle Iranian borrowing.
