Ultimately derived from Phoenician 𐤃𐤋𐤕 (dlt, literally “door”); compare Hebrew דָּלֶת (dálet), Arabic دَال (dāl) and Ancient Greek δέλτᾰ (déltă). Compare Classical Syriac ܐܵܕ݂ܠܵܬ݂ܵܐ (“folding doors”).
